Losing the fight with your increasing waistline? Did you know that by the year 2010 around 70% of Australian citizens will be above their healthy weight range? This is not propaganda, but is based on recent studies which state that 47% Australian women and 63% Australian men are heavier than they should be. So the next time you have a craving for chocolate, think twice before giving into it.

Dietary Guidelines

A well balanced and nourishing diet plan is the order of the day. Along with this, staying physically active is a must. There is nothing like physical activity and exercise to keep the calories burning. Incorporation of plenty of legumes, vegetables and fruits in your diet is advised for a whole host of health benefits.

For energy, eat whole-grain products such as rice, wheat, pasta, and bread. But be sure not to over-indulge. Excess carbohydrate can contribute to increase in weight. Dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese should be eaten frequently, however opt for the products made from low-fat milk.

Proteins should be acquired from lean meat only. Red meats should be avoided. Drinking lots of water is the best thing that you can do for your body, so make it a habit to drink your eight glasses of water a day.

Food to Steer Clear of

We all know that saturated and trans-fats are bad for the heart. Fat deposits in the cardiac muscle are enhanced on increasing fat consumption which gives rise to a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore fat intake should be kept at a minimum. Salt raises blood pressure levels. Salt consumption should be restricted. If you cannot do without salt, use potassium salts instead of sodium salts, they are better for your blood pressure.

We all know that alcohol is bad for health. Yet this has not affected Alcohol consumption at all, on the contrary, alcohol consumption is on the increase. Alcohol limits the ability of the liver to flush out toxic substances from the body. Therefore, these toxic substances remain behind in the blood stream and are responsible for a variety of diseases, including certain types of cancer. Hence, alcohol should be avoided.

It has been said over and over again that one’s health lies in one’s own hand and that no one can take better care of you than yourself. Following these simple guidelines and sticking to a regular exercise routine.
